MAJULI [ASSAM]: THE LARGEST RIVER ISLAND OF THE WORLD
Majuli island located on the river Brahmaputra. this island covers an area of 422sq kilometers and is accessible by ferry from Jorhat. The assamese saint Srimanta Sankhar dev established many satras{monastery} across Majuli. the island also accessible from lakhimpur in the north and dibrugarh in the east. the island can be covered in a day. the kamalbari village is considered as the centre of the island.
Lively hoods of people -majority people of this island involved in agriculture specially paddy cultivation. interesting to note that more than 100 or so variety of rice are grown here without use of any pesticides and artificial fertilizers. other major attractions of the place is bird watching. Majuli is a hotspot for a number of rare and endangered avian species including migratory birds that arrive in the winter season.
